Place of Flags

As visitors approach the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial, they first encounter the Place of Flags. This is a circular plaza surrounded by an arbor constructed out of California redwood. It features a central garden that hosts three flagpoles, on which fly the standards of the United States of America, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the POW/MIA flag. During special ceremonies, the flags of all of the U.S. military service branches are displayed as well. Inscribed on the granite retaining wall bordering the garden is the legend: “Vietnam – 1955-1975.”
